The nose art of the bomber with the serial number DK186 is among the best known in its category. It came from the emblem of the Metro Goldwyn Mayer film studio, except that the lion on the fuselage additionally had wings and held a bomb between its front paws. The machine carried the fuselage code ZL-L and a name took hold for it referring to retribution for the raids on the British capital. When the decision on the name had been taken, an artist from the squadron added in chalk on the side the name of an actress whose first letter matched the individual letter of the aircraft. That note was later repainted in white form and stayed on the aircraft.
DK186 made its first combat flight on the night of 29/30 May 1943, when 63 machines headed for a target in Germany and the squadron commander sat at the controls. Its last, twenty-sixth operation is recorded for the night of 25/26 November 1943, when 73 aircraft set out on the attack. The aircraft was then taken over by training units for converting crews onto four-engine types, and in the spring of 1944 it ended up in a hollow after damage while taxiing.
Version Mk V differed from the more widespread Mk II in landing gear from a different manufacturer, which on a model shows in the engine nacelles. In building, therefore, it pays to check whether the kit you choose offers this variant at all.
