A decal sheet with the markings of Hawker Hurricane aircraft in the Mk.I, Mk.IIB and Mk.IIC versions as they served with the South African Air Force. It is an accessory to a finished model in 1:72 scale, not a kit: the decals are applied to an already built and painted model and open up a subject you will hardly find in ordinary boxed sets.
The Hurricane was a British single-engined fighter with a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. The Mk.I version carried eight machine guns in the wing, the Mk.IIB had its armament extended and the Mk.IIC moved to 20 mm cannons; in the same order the weight grew and the output of the power unit changed. The South African Air Force used Hurricanes in the African and Mediterranean theaters, where the machines operated over desert as well as over mountainous interior. The camouflage and the markings therefore differ from the typical British home-based machines, and it is precisely this difference that makes the set interesting for a modeler who does not want yet another home defense machine on the shelf.
First bring the camouflage to a glossy state, as a matte finish under a decal almost always ends in silvering. Before applying, try the position of the markings dry and mark light reference points in pencil, best of all along the panel lines for the fuselage insignia. Dip the decal briefly, let it release on paper and move it to the model together with the backing, so that the film does not roll up. Press the excess water out with a soft cloth from the center outwards. On large areas of markings it helps, once dry, to nick the film lightly over the recesses and go over it again with softener. Finally seal the whole model with a clear coat, otherwise the edges of the decals will be rubbed during weathering.
This is a set of decals, not a model of an airplane. The model, paints and clear coat are not included in the package.
