An injection-molded plastic kit of ground equipment in 1:72 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Pit-Road. The subject is the Type 90 main battle tank, that is a more modern machine of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. The smaller scale gives the finished model a reasonable size for a display case and makes it possible to set a whole generational line of Japanese armor side by side. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The Type 90 was taken into service at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s and represented a marked technological step forward from the previous Type 74. The main armament is a 120 mm smoothbore gun of German design built under license, supplemented by an autoloader thanks to which a crew of three is enough. The hull and the turret have angular shapes compared with the older type, dictated by the use of composite armor, and the equipment includes a modern fire control system with stabilization and thermal imaging. Because of its weight and transport restrictions the Type 90 was concentrated above all with units in the north of Japan. Side by side with the Type 74, the model therefore shows the difference between generations of design well.
The angular surfaces of the turret and hull dominate this type, so it is worth spending time leveling the seams and sanding the parting lines that would otherwise show on large flat areas. Assemble the running gear and the tracks before you close the hull up. Over the primer, apply the top shades with an airbrush in thin coats, so that the engraved detail does not disappear. Japanese equipment usually appears in a two-color camouflage of dark green and brown with hard edges. Finally a dark wash into the recesses, fine emphasis of the edges with a dry brush and discreet dust on the running gear all help; with modern equipment it pays to keep the weathering rather restrained.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
