A raised rivet set from the Czech maker HGW for the model of the Japanese Ki-61-Id Hien fighter, known to the Allies under the code name Tony, in 1:72 scale. It is neither a kit nor spare parts — it is a surface detailing accessory that gives the model raised, that is proud, riveting laid out for the specific type. That is a detail you cannot imitate by scribing into plastic: the real surface has rivets standing above the skin, whereas a riveting wheel makes dimples. The layout is prepared for the given type and scale, so measuring from plans falls away. The number of sheets, of rivet rows and the rivet spacing are given in the manufacturer's instructions in the package, which also describe how to apply them.
The Ki-61 Hien was a single-engine Kawasaki fighter and an exception among Japanese machines of its day: instead of a radial it had a liquid-cooled inverted V12 engine, which gave it a slender fuselage and a pointed nose. The Ki-61-I Tei version, commonly written as Ki-61-Id, was a late production standard with a lengthened fuselage and heavier cannon armament in the nose. The airframe was all-metal with dense riveting on the fuselage and the wing — and in a small scale the surface texture is exactly what plastic molds simplify the most.
Before you use the set, sand down the seams and the traces of the mold parting lines and degrease the surface; on an uneven surface the riveting will not seat evenly. Work in shorter sections and watch how the rows follow on — it pays to start from a prominent straight edge and work out from it. Seal the finished surface with a clear coat that anchors the rivets and evens out the sheen, and only then apply decals and weathering. A light wash or very fine drybrushing will bring the riveting out; in 1:72, though, a hint is enough, because exaggerated contrast cheapens the whole model.
