Luftwaffe Balkenkreuze Early — Part II 1:72 is a set of self-adhesive masks for spraying German national crosses in the early pattern. It is the second part of a series, that is, an accessory for painting, not a model.

A set of cut self-adhesive masks from the Czech manufacturer Armycast for aircraft models in 1:72 scale. It serves for spraying the German national cross, the so-called Balkenkreuz, in the early pattern. The series is divided into several parts; this is the second of them and it follows on from the first. These are not decals and not a kit — the package holds only masks, through which the insignia is sprayed in paint straight onto the model.
The Balkenkreuz is a squared bar cross that was used by the Luftwaffe as its national marking. Its graphic form changed over time: the early pattern worked with broad light areas around a dark core, whereas the later variants narrowed the light areas step by step down to a mere outline. The difference is clearly visible on a model, which is why the manufacturer offers the individual patterns separately. Always check the form and the dimensions of the cross against photographs or a profile of the particular machine — with insignia of this kind they differed from one example to another and by production plant as well.
A Balkenkreuz has long straight edges, on which any seepage of paint is noticed at once. Apply the mask, therefore, to fully cured and degreased paintwork, run a blunt tool over the edges and spray thin coats at right angles to the surface. On a two-color cross the light color goes on across the whole area of the insignia first, then the center is masked and the dark infill is sprayed. In 1:72 scale the masks are small, so it pays to work with tweezers and to have a magnifier at hand. Before spraying, check that the cross does not reach onto a rounded edge where the mask would not settle.
The package holds masks only. The model, paints and glue are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.
