1:72 X-35 JSF BASIC mask set (New Ware)

This is an aftermarket mask set in 1:72 scale from the manufacturer New Ware. It is neither a kit nor a part of a model, but an aid for painting: the set holds machine-cut self-adhesive masks that are applied to the clear parts and protect the glazing during spraying. The BASIC designation describes the extent of the set — it is its simplest level, aimed at the cockpit glazing. The shapes of the masks are adapted to the Italeri, Revell or Tamiya kit, so they fit without trimming.

Why a mask and not tape or a decal

Cutting masking tape by hand for small curved frames in 1:72 scale is lengthy and the result differs from piece to piece — the edge tends to be wavy and the paint runs under. A cut mask has its edge given by machine, so both sides of the cockpit look the same. Compared with decals for the frames, a mask has the advantage that the frame is genuinely sprayed in the color of the airframe, with no glossy step of a carrier film and no risk of silvering.

How to work with the mask

First wash the clear parts in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and let them dry, so that the mask adheres well. Take the mask off the backing with pointed tweezers or a toothpick, seat it dry and only then press it down with a soft wooden stick from the center to the edges. Seal the edges with a thin coat of the base color or of gloss clear — anything running under then stops at that layer and the color of the frame has a clean edge. Spray in several light coats; a heavy coat forms a ridge at the edge of the mask. Take the mask off while the paint is freshly dried, best of all within a few hours.
