A masking set for the glazing of the McDonnell FH-1 Phantom in 1:72 scale is a set of pre-cut templates with which accurate cockpit frames are created in a few minutes.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of pre-cut masking templates for the glazing of a model of the first carrier jet fighter, the McDonnell FH-1 Phantom, in 1:72 scale. The templates follow the shape of the canopy frames, so measuring, cutting and blind guessing of widths all disappear. The result is a sprayed finish with a sharp edge even in the places where the canopy curves away and where masking by hand usually fails.
The FH-1 Phantom went down in history as the jet machine that was the first in American naval aviation to demonstrate routine operation from the deck of an aircraft carrier. The design relied on a pair of turbojets housed in the wing roots, which gave the aircraft a clean fuselage and an unusually slender silhouette. It served briefly, at the turn of the 1940s and 1950s, and its significance is mainly developmental, because a whole line of later carrier jet types followed on from it. The small canopy with its thin frames is a detail on a model in this scale that gives away the quality of the work at once.
Clean the glazing and rid it of fingerprints, transfer the masks with tweezers and press them down first in the middle, then from the center outward. On curved areas slight warming with a hair dryer helps, as the film adapts to the shape better. Spray perpendicularly and in thin coats so that the paint is not pushed under the edge. After spraying, peel the masks off slowly and at an acute angle.
The set is an accessory for a build, not a model. It contains neither paints nor a kit.
