QMT 1:72 Messerschmitt Bf-109F-2/Bf-109F-4 — wheel bay masks replace masking fluid and tape cut by hand with a shape pre-cut exactly to the outline of the bay.
Responsibility details are not available.
The QMT set deals with one specific step of the build: separating the paint inside the wheel bays from the camouflage on the lower surface of the wing. The masks are cut to the shape of the bay, so you only pop them out of the sheet, carry them to the model and press them down. Nothing is glued on permanently, and the mask comes off once the spraying is done.
Bays are commonly plugged with masking fluid, foam or crumpled paper. All three routes have the same weakness: the edge never comes out exactly on the edge of the opening, and once it is removed a blurred transition stays there that has to be repaired with a brush. In 1:72 scale such a touch-up is visible at once, because the bay is only a few millimeters across on the model. A pre-cut mask has its edge set by machine and can be repeated on the next model in exactly the same way. Fluid can also pull paint that has not fully cured out of the depth of the bay.
The Bf 109F was a development series of the German fighter with an aerodynamically reworked nose, rounded wingtips and no bracing struts on the tail surfaces. The F-2 and F-4 versions differed mainly in their armament and their powerplant, while the shape of their wheel bays is the same, which is why one set covers them both.
The package contains the masking set only. The model, the paints and the thinners are not part of it.
