The North American B-45 Tornado was the first American four-engined jet bomber aircraft introduced into line service. It first flew in 1947 and in design it stood at the transition between the piston and the jet era: a straight wing, a fuselage of proportions similar to the previous generation and four jet engines placed in pairs in nacelles under the wing. The crew consisted of a pilot, a copilot, a navigator and the operator of the rear defensive position. In service it lasted a relatively short time, because a design with a straight wing grew obsolete quickly against the swept types that came immediately afterwards. It kept its significance chiefly as the first step toward jet types of its category.
A natural metal or dark surface gives decals trouble with covering: light lettering may show through on it and the color of the printing seems weaker than it is on the sheet. It helps to give the decal time: let it dry thoroughly once it is settled and only then judge the covering. If it is insufficient, a second piece of the same motif is laid over the dried decal, or its surroundings are discreetly darkened. It is critical too that the gloss base should be truly smooth; the slightest graininess on a saturated base optically worsens the covering.
