A sheet for the Mustang III in 1:72. All four finishes come from a single unit, No. 315 Squadron of the Royal Air Force, and fall into the period from the spring to the end of the summer of 1944.
Responsibility details are not available.
The British designation Mustang III belonged to machines that still had the original shape of fuselage and, with it, a bulged canopy removing the worst weakness of the early version, poor sideways view. With a supercharged Merlin engine the type gained a range no single-engine fighter had had until then and could escort bomber formations all the way to the target. The squadrons that received it moved within a few weeks from defensive tasks over the Channel to long flights deep into the enemy's airspace.
A single squadron holds the whole sheet together, and that is where its value lies. Anyone building several examples will put together from it a row of machines that really stood side by side at one airfield and carried the same pair of letters before the national insignia. The differences between them are therefore fine and interesting: the individual letter changes, the position of the serial number changes and on one machine a personal inscription under the cockpit is added. The set is thus better suited to a thematic grouping than to a single isolated model.
Given that a great many small markings come together on the model, it pays to work in stages and to let the surface rest between them. Adhesion to the rivets will be improved by a drop of softener applied only once the marking has settled. The model itself is not part of the delivery.
