A sheet of waterslide decals in 1:72 scale devoted to the Panavia Tornado F.3 interceptor version in the state matching 1990. The package contains only the sheet of markings, so it is an accessory for finishing a model that is already built and painted.
The Tornado F.3 was a two-seat twin-engined aircraft with a variable-geometry wing, derived from the strike version and adapted for interceptor duties with a long time on patrol. It is told apart from the strike machines by its lengthened nose and a different mix of armament. At the turn of the 1980s and 1990s the machines wore gray low-contrast camouflage with subdued markings.
Low-contrast markings tend to be printed in dark gray shades that are hard to place on a gray base. It pays to draw the position of the markings lightly in pencil beforehand or to make a paper template, because once it is stuck down you can no longer align the decal with the panel lines. Once dry, the area has to be sealed: matte varnish not only unifies the sheen but above all hides the edges of the carrier membrane, which would otherwise stand out on a monochrome surface. Varnish in thin coats, as a heavy coat will cloud the subdued shades.
