About product

New Ware 1:72 de Havilland Sea Venom FAW.21: mask set

The set holds precisely shaped self-adhesive masks for a model of the Sea Venom FAW.21 carrier-borne fighter in 1:72 scale. It is not a model or parts of one. The masks are applied to the glazing and to other areas that are to stay clean after spraying, and once the paint has dried they are taken off. The result is sharp edges on the canopy frames without lengthy cutting of tape directly on the model. The manufacturer is the Czech brand New Ware, which concentrates on mask sets.

The real subject

The Sea Venom was the naval version of the de Havilland Venom jet, a machine with a characteristic twin-boom tail and a cockpit for a two-man crew seated side by side. For service on aircraft carriers it was given strengthened landing gear, an arrestor hook and folding wings. The FAW designation stands for an all-weather fighter; in the second half of the 1950s the type formed the backbone of British carrier-borne night and all-weather fighter aviation and other operators used it as well.

How to fit the masks

First clear the glazing of fingerprints and grease, ideally with a mild soapy solution and air drying. Lift the mask off the backing with a sharp point, set it in place and press it down with a toothpick or the rubber tip of a pencil, above all in the corners. Spray in thin coats; a heavy coat of paint creates a step at the edge of the mask. Spray the interior shade of the frames first, then the undercoat and finally the top camouflage. Take the mask off while the paint has not fully cured, otherwise the finish underneath may lift with it.

Who the set is for

  • modelers who want cleanly unmasked canopy frames without trimming by hand
  • builders of British carrier aircraft of the 1950s in 1:72 scale
  • anyone who would rather stick masking tape on than cut it with a scalpel on a finished canopy

The mask set is an accessory for a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is exclusively a mask set; the kit itself and the paints have to be obtained separately.

Shortly after spraying, while the paint has not fully cured. Paint left too long may tear away together with the finish.

Masking tapes for this purpose have a weak adhesive. Any residue comes off with a damp cloth or a cotton swab; do not use aggressive solvents on clear plastic.

They are not. The shapes are die-cut to the outline of a particular glazing in 1:72 scale and will not fit in another scale.
