A turned metal barrel in 1:72 scale from the Polish maker Aber. It is not a kit of a vehicle but a detail accessory that on a model of the Soviet ISU-152 self-propelled gun will replace the plastic barrel. The metal part has the correct stepped run of diameters and an exactly shaped double-baffle muzzle brake — that is, precisely the features that injection-molded plastic simplifies in a small scale.
The ML-20S of 152.4 mm caliber was the self-propelled adaptation of a heavy gun-howitzer, which the Soviet Union built into an armored superstructure on the chassis of the IS heavy tank. The result was the ISU-152, whose shell of around forty kilograms could break up fortifications and heavily armored targets alike. Its crews therefore gave it a nickname that referred to hunting big game, because it could deal even with the German tanks named after animals. The characteristic features are a massive muzzle brake and the heavy stepped shape of the barrel.
Cut the plastic barrel off as close to the armored mantlet as possible, clean the hole out with a drill and glue the metal part in with cyanoacrylate glue or epoxy. Watch the axis — a massive barrel easily sits crooked, so check it from several angles while the glue is still setting. Degrease the metal before painting and lay down a base coat for metals. Soviet green looks better lightened and dusted with pigments; make the scorching around the muzzle brake with a dark pigment.
This is a detail accessory, not a complete model. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package.
