A set of masking stencils in 1:72 scale from Armycast. The marking is not laid on the model from a decal but through a cut film: the mask is applied to cured paintwork, the star is sprayed in paint and the film is taken off. The finished marking is part of the paintwork, so it has no carrier layer and no glossy edge. The package is an accessory for an aircraft model and holds neither the model itself nor paints.
The name describes a star with a double outline — a white edging completed by a red line. The set belongs to a continuous range in which the manufacturer distinguishes an early, a mid and a late form of this marking; this item is from the late part of the range. The division is a convention of the manufacturer, not verified dating, so compare the shape and the proportions of the star with a photograph or a color profile of the particular machine before building. The marking differed even between individual aircraft of the same type.
Let the base coat cure thoroughly, degrease the area and press the mask down all the way around — it is precisely on an edge that has not been pressed down that paint creeps under most often. Spray with an airbrush at right angles to the surface, in several thin coats instead of one rich one. A two-color edging comes about layer by layer: the lighter shade, dry, mask over, the darker shade. Take the film off shortly after the paint has dried, with tweezers and at a sharp angle, not by pulling it straight up. At the end, cover the whole model with a matte or satin varnish so that the gloss of the marking blends with the paintwork.
This is a masking accessory, not a model. Paints, glue and a kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
