Replacement tracks for a model of the T-28 tank in a small scale. From the side the track is the most conspicuous part of the whole running gear, and the viewer looks at it at natural eye level, so this is exactly where it pays to swap the part from the kit for a separately made one.
The T-28 was a Soviet medium tank of the 1930s and belonged to the multi-turret layout that was popular at the time. The main turret with a short 76.2 mm gun was complemented by two smaller machine gun turrets set ahead of it. When it appeared it was one of the few medium tanks in the world in series production, and it was still in service at the start of the Second World War.
A separately made track is usually more legible in the pattern of the contact face, in the teeth and in the detail of the openings, even in 1:72 scale, where the individual links are the size of a grain. Sharper edges also respond better to painting: a wash stays in the right places and dry brushing brings out the worn faces where they would merge on a soft part.
Cut the surplus material away with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder off. Wash and degrease the parts before painting. Try the fit dry first and make sure the track beds onto the wheels along its whole length and does not twist anywhere. Match the glue and the exact procedure to the material of the parts, following the manufacturer's instructions. It pays to paint from a dark base and then only hint at a metallic sheen on the edges that rub against the ground.
