About product

Armycast 1:72 U.S. Insignias June 1943 - Aug 1943

A set of die-cut self-adhesive vinyl masks in 1:72 scale for spraying the American aircraft insignia in the form used in the summer of 1943. The marking is not applied as a decal but is created by masking and spraying the individual colors in turn, so that it lies directly in the finish of the model, has no carrier film and runs no risk of silvering on a matte surface.

The insignia

At the end of June 1943 the US Army Air Forces supplemented the existing white star in a blue circle with white rectangular bars on both sides, so that the insignia would be easier to recognize from the side and in flight. The whole insignia was moreover briefly surrounded by a red border. This form was in practice used for only a few weeks, because the red surround was replaced by a blue one soon afterward. It is precisely the short period of use that makes this marking one of the most interesting variants for modeling, because it anchors the build of a particular machine very precisely in time.

Use and tips

The model has to be smoothly sprayed, degreased and fully cured before masking. Lift the masks off the sheet with tweezers, lay them in place and press the edges down thoroughly, so that no paint runs under the film. Work in layers from the lighter color to the darker one and let each of them dry properly; apply the paint thinly, because a heavy coat leaves a ridge at the edge. Lift the mask off shortly after it has dried, pulling sideways at an angle. A gloss base limits paint creeping under better than a rough matte surface and makes sharp edges on the finished marking easier.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of American aircraft of 1943 in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who want to spray markings rather than apply them
  • Anyone interested in the briefly used transitional form of the insignia
  • More advanced modelers working with multi-layer masking

The package holds masking film only. The paints and the model are not included in the package.
