A masking set from the Dead Design brand in 1:48 scale for the Invader in the DB-26B/C version. It is neither a model nor a part of one but a set of pre-cut masks, which are stuck onto a finished surface and bound the area that is to stay free of paint. For individual types this range also has versions for masking from outside and inside and separate sets of national insignia - this item is the basic version without those epithets.
The Douglas Invader is a twin-engine all-metal attack aircraft with a narrow fuselage and a glazed nose. The DB designation corresponds to a postwar conversion of the machines for controlling unmanned vehicles; the equipment of these aircraft differs from the standard bomber versions. The model has a lot of glazing and flat areas, so masking is a substantial part of the work on it.
The commonest mistake is not in the mask but in the timing. A mask goes onto a finish that is really dry all the way through, not just to the touch - fresh paint is soft and the adhesive of the mask will lift it along with the base when it comes off. With fast-drying paints count on a gap of at least a day, and with enamels considerably longer. Before sticking it down, rid the surface of dust and of grease from your fingers; a greasy mark is exactly where the paint will run underneath. Once the mask is on, press the edge down with a toothpick or a fingernail, so that no air pocket is left anywhere.
