The Mitsubishi A5M2b, code-named Claude, was a carrier-based fighter of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service of the second half of the 1930s. It was an all-metal monoplane with fixed landing gear fitted with aerodynamic wheel spats and with a radial engine in a narrow cowling. On some machines of this version an enclosed cockpit canopy was tried, which did not catch on in service. It is precisely the glazed part that is the key place for double-sided masking.
A double-sided procedure calls for discipline in handling. Hold transparent parts solely by the edges, best in thin gloves or with tweezers with smooth jaws. A fingerprint in the place where the mask is to go shows under the paint as a matte patch and the paint will not take hold in it. Before work, wash the part briefly in lukewarm water with detergent and let it dry freely in the air, so that no fibers from a cloth are left on the surface. Work face by face: the inner mask and the interior shade first, thorough drying, then turn the part over and mask the outside. Between stages set the part down on a soft surface rather than on a paper towel, whose fibers stick into an unmatured finish.
