A set of pre-cut masks in 1:72 scale meant for covering the wheel bays of a model of the Italian Macchi C.205 Veltro fighter. These are not cockpit painting masks and not a structural part, but shaped plugs that are put into the bay before spraying. The purpose is simple: the inside of a bay usually has a different shade from the external surface, and without covering it the mist of paint from an airbrush gets in. The particular form and the number of pieces are stated on the box of the set.
The Macchi C.205 Veltro was an Italian fighter from the later part of the development line with a license-built inverted V12 engine. It differs from the preceding type chiefly in its power plant and in the reworking of the nose that went with it. The landing gear retracted into the wing, so the bays are well in view on a model and a clean job on them is one of the details anyone notices on a finished piece.
Put the plug in only once the internal paint of the bay is completely dry, or it will stick to it or damage it on removal. It has to sit without force. A mask rammed in spreads the walls of the bay and leaves a visible groove at the edge once it is taken out. A plug lying loose, on the other hand, moves while spraying and paint gets inside. Ideal is a fit that holds by shape, not by pressure. Run a finger or the blunt tip of a toothpick around the edge of the bay, so that the mask is flush with the surface of the wing and no step forms where the edge of the paint could settle. Spray in thin coats and avoid pointing the nozzle straight into the bay. Take the plug out while the paint is freshly dry, carefully with tweezers and straight out, so that it does not catch on an edge.
