About product

The SU-1 on the T-26 chassis in 1:72 scale from the maker UM

A plastic kit of the Soviet SU-1 self-propelled gun, which came about on the chassis of the T-26 light tank. According to the name this package is in the form with plastic tracks, that is with running gear assembled from parts in hard plastic. The 1:72 scale is among the most widespread for military vehicles, and the model fits easily into an existing collection and into a smaller diorama.

The real subject

The SU-1 was a development design from the beginning of the 1930s, which tried out the idea of putting a gun of larger caliber on the production chassis of a light tank. In place of a rotating turret the vehicle received a fixed enclosed superstructure with limited traverse, which simplified the construction and enlarged the room for the crew. The basis was the T-26 chassis with its characteristic leaf-spring suspension and small road wheels. The machine stayed in prototype form and never entered series production, so it is a subject that turns up in collections only rarely.

Building and painting tips

In 1:72 scale it pays to work with thin liquid cement for plastic and to apply it a drop at a time, so that no overflow forms on the small parts. Seat and align the running gear before you close the hull up and put the superstructure on, or the tracks will be hard to set later. It is good to try the plastic tracks dry before fitting and to glue them in sections with an eye to the right amount of sag. Before painting, apply a thin coat of primer, which evens out the surface and improves adhesion. Spray the base shade with an airbrush and modulate it by lightening the upper surfaces. A wash brings out the engraved panel lines and the rivets, while pigments work well on the running gear and the lower parts of the hull.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Soviet interwar vehicles in a single 1:72 scale
  • Modelers looking for a less usual subject outside the mainstream
  • Builders of smaller dioramas, where a large scale takes up too much room
  • More experienced beginners who already manage small parts and tracked running gear

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a classic injection-molded kit that has to be glued and painted. Glue and paints are not included in the package.

The name states tracks in hard plastic, which are glued with ordinary modeling cement. A variant of the same vehicle with tracks in a flexible material is made as well, so go by the exact designation in the name when ordering.

Rather for a modeler who has already built something. The 1:72 scale means small parts and tracked running gear, which calls for patience in the setting up.

Ordinary modeling acrylic or enamel paint applied with an airbrush is used, with a wash into the engraved panel lines and pigments on the running gear. Choose the particular shade according to the form you have picked.
