About product

Italian infantry of the 16th century, 2nd set, 1:72 (Red Box)

A set of figures in 1:72 scale from the maker Red Box, focused thematically on Italian infantry of the 16th century. The number in the name refers to the position in a numbered line that the maker releases set by set; sets on the same theme and scale can be composed side by side on a diorama into one whole. This is not a standalone model; the figures serve to populate a scene, giving a building, the terrain or the whole tableau scale and a readable story.

The real subject

The foot detachments of the Italian states in the 16th century, that is at the time of the Italian Wars. The armament of infantry then rested on melee weapons and polearms complemented by early firearms. Protection of the body was partial: a cuirass and an open helmet on some of the men, the rest in ordinary period clothing. No uniform pattern of dress existed at this time, so the variety of a formation follows directly from the real subject.

Scale, readability and a mass scene

A standing figure measures roughly twenty-five millimeters at 1:72 scale. The information is therefore carried mainly by the silhouette and the large areas: the doublet, the hose, the head covering and the outline of the weapon. There is no point in painting fine drawing literally; contrast is more readable: a base tone, a darker flowing layer into the folds and a dry brush on the edges and the protrusions. Adapt the painting procedure to the material of the castings; with softer plastics a flexible undercoat and thin layers pay off so that the paint does not crack at the bends. Lay the placement on the base out in advance: the impression of a close rank is made by a regular rhythm of spacing and an even height of the heads rather than by the number of figures.

Who the set is for

FAQ

The number of figures and the composition of the poses are stated by the maker for the particular set. For a larger scene, count on combining several sets of the same scale.

Yes. The theme and the 1:72 scale are the same, so figures from the individual numbered sets can stand side by side on one diorama.

Work in large areas and with contrast. A base tone, a darker flowing layer into the folds and a dry brush on the edges give a better result at this scale than an attempt at literal drawing of detail.

Yes. Figures in 1:72 are painted quickly and a mistake is lost at this scale; it is a good way to practice working with contrast before larger scales.
