Italian infantry with pikes, 3rd set, 1:72 is a set of Red Box figures focused on polearm infantry of the 16th century.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of figures in 1:72 scale from the maker Red Box. Compared with the general infantry of the same line it is defined by the type of weapon: the name states a pike, that is a long polearm. That also determines the role of the set in a scene; polearm infantry is set up in close blocks and on a diorama it makes up a firm, statically acting formation that the other sets line up against.
The foot detachments of the Italian states of the 16th century armed with a long shafted weapon. A pike was held in both hands, in a close formation the points leaned forward and formed a continuous front edge of the formation. The dress corresponded to the ordinary clothing of the period, complemented by a cuirass and an open helmet on some of the men; no uniform pattern existed then.
In 1:72 the pike is the most sensitive part of the whole set. A long thin part bows in storage and the paint cracks when it is bent; check the shafts before painting, then, and straighten them in warm water if need be. When a cast shaft is too brittle or too short, a common substitute is thin steel wire or a bristle cut to the length needed and glued into the figure's hand with cyanoacrylate. It is precisely the shafts that give a scene its vertical: a rank of figures by itself merges with the terrain, but a forest of leaning points is read by the eye at a distance and makes a few figures look like a deep formation. Unify the angle of all the shafts, then; an irregular angle breaks a formation up optically more than differing colors of clothing.
The figures are supplied unpainted. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
