A set of figures in 1:72 scale from the maker Red Box, the first package of the numbered line of 16th century Cossack infantry. The theme is a foot element, that is figures meant to be laid out across the area of a diorama; this is the starting set of the line, which further packages of the same scale follow on from.
Cossack foot detachments in the territory of present-day Ukraine in the 16th century. The dress built on the period clothing of the region: an outer coat belted with a sash, looser hose, a soft head covering. The armament was mixed, melee as well as firearms, and the protection of the body partial. No uniform pattern of dress existed at this time, so the formation is by the nature of the real subject made up of figures that look different from one another.
With this set the non-uniform dress is both an opportunity and a trap. An opportunity because a modeler does not have to watch the exact shade of a uniform; a trap because at 1:72 scale a group painted at random falls apart into patches of color and stops reading as one formation. A proven procedure is to choose two dominant colors for the coats, each in several lightnesses, and to complement them with one saturated accent that appears in the crowd only a few times. Build the array deliberately irregular: Cossack infantry is not a line formation, so slight differences in orientation and spacing are in this case truer than a straight line. Make the base rather darker; light terrain takes the outline away from figures at a small scale and the whole group is lost optically.
The figures are supplied unpainted. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
