Water River, a neoprene terrain set

A set of terrain features in neoprene with a watercourse design from the maker Green Stuff World. This is neither a kit nor a mat covering a whole table: these are separate pieces with a finished design that you lay out on a playing surface or on a base board and mark a river, a brook or an arm of a body of water with them. The material is soft and thin, so it lies flat, straightens itself out after being rolled up and does not raise the figures above the surrounding terrain.

• A variable feature to go with neoprene mats, as the shape of the course can be changed by arranging the pieces

How to work with it

First lay the course out dry and find the places where there will be a crossing over the water: it is precisely a ford or a bridge that turns a river into an interesting obstacle, not just a colored band. Then soften the edges by scattering a fine grit along the edge, adding tufts of grass or low vegetation and thus optically hiding the transition between the neoprene and the mat. The water design is cool and little saturated, so it will bear more colorful surroundings too, only take care that the greenery around it is not overlit, otherwise the river will optically fall away. If a freshly unpacked piece is wavy, lay it out and weight it down for a while. Take the surface as finished: neoprene does not take ordinary modeling paints well by spraying, and solvent glues do not belong on it.
