An accessory for modelers who build a large model with an uncovered cockpit. The sheet contains full-color printed straps, clasps and accompanying elements, which are transferred with water onto a seat from a kit that has already been built and painted. The layered printing gives a belt a relief, so it has an edge and casts a shadow; compared with drawn belts the difference is clearly apparent in 1:32 scale.
The Grumman F-14A is a twin-engine two-seat carrier aircraft with a variable-geometry wing. The GRU-7 series seat comes from the British firm Martin-Baker. In a large scale the cockpit tends to be one of the most closely judged places on a model, and the restraint system is a detail that is recognized at a glance.
The most frequent fault with decals is silvering: the area under the film turns gray and looks as if it were dusty. The cause is always the same: air was left between the decal and the surface, and it refracts the light. It arises on a matte or rough varnish, on paint that has not dried perfectly and everywhere a decal is laid onto an engraved line without a softener. The prevention is simple. Paint the seat, let the paint really cure and go over the surface with a clear gloss varnish. Soak the decal briefly in lukewarm water, let it rest, slide it off the paper into place and draw the excess water off. Then apply a thin layer of softener, which softens the film and draws it to the surface, and push the air out with a cotton swab from the center toward the edges. Do not touch the element until it is dry. A final matte varnish unifies the surface and hides the edges of the film.
