The set from the British maker Kits-World is a full-color decal with a three-dimensional layer that is applied to the instrument panel of the cockpit of a Tornado GR.4 kit in 1:32 scale. The dials, the scales and the frames of the instruments are printed and the surface has a relief, so the gauges stand out visibly above the base. In a large scale the cockpit under an open canopy is seen a great deal and this accessory is the fastest way to get clean and legible detail into it without painting small dials with a brush.
The Tornado GR.4 is a two-seat combat aircraft with a variable-geometry wing, operated by the Royal Air Force in the strike and reconnaissance role as a modernization of the older GR.1 version. The crew is made up of a pilot and a navigator in a tandem arrangement. The front station combines classic analog instruments with displays, and it is precisely this mixture that is laborious to build: white scales, colored sectors and the dark frames of displays alternate on a small area.
First sand the surface on the kit part smooth, because cast raised gauges would make bumps under the layer. Spray the base with a dark paint and varnish it with a gloss varnish, which will reduce air pockets and the risk of silvering. Be sparing with water as well as with softener: the three-dimensional layer reacts to them differently from an ordinary thin decal, dose the softener drop by drop and never run a brush or a cotton swab over the surface. Seat the set, press it on gently with a soft cloth and let it dry through thoroughly. Lead the final matte varnish around the panel, not across the dials, because the sheen of the glasses of the instruments is part of the effect.
The maker makes several very similar sets for the same aircraft, which differ in the variant of the displays as well as in the scale; choose according to the exact designation of the variant. This is an accessory for a kit, not a model on its own; a kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
