About product

New Ware masking set 1:48 F-16A/C Fighting Falcon, BASIC level

This is not an aircraft model but an accessory to a build: a sheet of self-adhesive masks cut from what is known as kabuki tape, meant for a model of the F-16A/C Fighting Falcon fighter in 1:48 scale. The masks are popped out of the sheet with tweezers, applied to the clear part, and the area is then sprayed together with the rest of the airframe. New Ware grades its sets BASIC, ADVANCED and EXPERT by scope; BASIC is the smallest version, aimed at the essentials. The exact list of contents is stated by the manufacturer on the packaging.

Why a mask instead of decals and hand-cut tape

On modern fighters the canopy frames run in fine, often curved lines. Cutting them out of tape by hand means an unsteady hand and uneven width, while a decal on a frame never blends into the finish around it and the carrier film usually shows at the edge. A frame sprayed through a mask, by contrast, has the same shade, the same degree of sheen and the same texture as the whole model, because it was made with the same paint. That is a difference even a layman notices without knowing why.

Usage tips

Before masking, wash the clear part in lukewarm soapy water and let it air dry so that no greasy film is left on the surface. Press the mask down with a soft tool all around, especially on curves, where the tape lifts most easily. Spray in several really thin coats and direct the paint from the edge of the mask inward, so that it does not run under the edge. Lift the masks shortly after the paint has flashed off, while the finish is still flexible, and pull them at an angle back over themselves rather than straight up.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want sharp cockpit frames without cutting tape by hand
  • Beginners for whom the basic range of masking is enough
  • Builders of modern jet fighters in 1:48 scale
  • Anyone who has tried a decal on a frame once and was not happy with it

The package contains masks only. The kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a set of cut masks, that is an accessory to a build. The kit itself, paints and glue are not in the package. The set is made for the Hasegawa kit.

It is the level of scope of the set. The manufacturer uses the levels BASIC, ADVANCED and EXPERT, and BASIC is the smallest one. The exact list of pieces is on the packaging.

Lift it soon after the paint has flashed off, while the layer is still flexible, and pull it at an angle back over itself. Tearing it straight up is what usually breaks the edges.

Yes. Offcuts of kabuki tape suit masking small areas or soft camouflage transitions on other builds, so do not throw the sheet away.
