This is not a kit but a masking set. The masks are cut from Japanese kabuki masking paper, which holds on the surface with a mild adhesive, follows gentle curves well and leaves no residue when peeled off. The set is prepared for the twin-engine Lockheed P-2 patrol aircraft and its SP-2 versions in 1:72 scale. The manufacturer offers several grades of coverage for the same subject; this item is the ADVANCED one, which means a wider reach than the basic grade but less than the highest level available. The grade of the set is the main detail that tells the variants for the same aircraft apart. The masks are die-cut to the shape of the Hasegawa kit.

The real subject

The Neptune was an American patrol and anti-submarine aircraft with a long service life. Its hallmarks are the glazed nose, the extensive cockpit glazing and, on later versions, the auxiliary jet engines in pods under the wing. Models of this subject have a lot of clear areas and masking them by hand with tape takes a long time, which is the main reason pre-cut masks pay off.

Use

Peel the mask off the backing film with tweezers, lay it on dry and press it down with a soft stick or a toothpick so that the edge seats properly. Spray the paint in thin coats, otherwise it will creep under the edge. Remove the mask while the paint is freshly dry, not once it has fully cured, and pull it at a sharp angle toward yourself. Any adhesive residue can be removed with lukewarm water.
