A set of pre-cut masking templates from the SX-Art brand for a model of the Il-2 attack aircraft in the two-seat pattern, in 1:48 from the maker Zvezda. The templates are cut to the shapes of a particular kit, so when painting you have nothing to trace. It is not a kit of the aircraft; the model itself has to be had.
The Il-2 is a single-engined attack aircraft with an armored forward fuselage. The two-seat version has room behind the pilot for a second crew member with a flexible gun, which changes the shape of the rear part of the canopy and adds further glazing. It is exactly the two-seat cockpit that matters for masking: there are more frames and they are narrow.
The two-seat version puts a modeler in front of a typical problem: the camouflage pattern has to carry on smoothly across the glazing of the rear cockpit and across its framing. When the glazing is masked only as a whole and the pattern breaks on it, the eye spots it at once. With pre-cut templates you can paint the frames in the shade of the upper camouflage and let the blotches pass from the fuselage onto the canopy with no jump. The second critical area is the edge between the upper surfaces and the light underside, which on the Il-2 runs along a strongly shaped side of the fuselage. A template holds it the same on the left and the right. Once the masks are off, it pays to go over the edges with a light overspray of heavily thinned paint, so that the transition does not read as stuck on.
This is a masking add-on, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
