The templates are cut to the shapes of a particular kit, so when painting, tracing small parts falls away. In 1:72 that shows most, because cutting tape by hand for small glazing is thankless work. It is not a kit of the aircraft; the model itself has to be had.
The U-2A is a single-engined reconnaissance aircraft with a very slender fuselage and an exceptionally long wing of great span. The landing gear is arranged on the centerline of the fuselage with auxiliary outriggers under the wings, the cockpit is small and its glazing has fairly simple shapes. The structure is optimized for flight at great altitude, and the light build of the airframe matches that.
This type belongs among the machines that wear a uniform finish rather than a varied pattern, and that is a different discipline for a modeler. When there is no camouflage to break up the imperfections, it is the cleanness of the edges that decides: the frames of the glazing, the areas around the air intake and the boundary between matte and glossier surfaces. A pre-cut mask holds a sharp edge even on small parts, where tape would not follow a curve. Given the enormous span, it pays to support the model while painting and to spray in sections, so that the wing does not sag. Apply thinly, and build uniform surfaces up with several light coats, because a heavy layer on a smooth surface shows up every transition. Take the mask off before the paint has fully cured, and even the edge out with an overspray of a heavily thinned shade if need be.
