It is not a kit, nor a figure, but an add-on to a vehicle model: a turned metal part in 1:35 from the Polish maker Aber that replaces the plastic MG 34 machine gun with its armor shield on a model. On most models the machine gun is a small but conspicuous item — it sits on top of the hull or on a mount, so everyone who looks a model over looks at it. Injection-molded plastic has its limits on a part this thin: the perforated cooling jacket stays merely suggested and the barrel tends to be tapered so that it can come out of the mold. A metal part does away with those compromises.
The MG 34 was a 7.92 mm general-purpose machine gun with a perforated cooling jacket and a quick-change barrel; besides infantry use it was fitted on vehicle mounts. The armor shield that the name mentions protected the gunner when firing from an open position, and on a model it forms a separate surface that changes the silhouette of the whole weapon markedly. On a finished model it is a detail that documents a particular pattern of mount.
Fit the metal barrel only at the end of the build, ideally after the base coat of the vehicle, so that it does not get bent during handling. Open the seat in the mount out with a drill so that the part slips in without pressure; glue with gel cyanoacrylate glue, which gives time to line the axis up. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and prime it with a primer for metal. The weapon finishes well with a dark steel color, fine lightening of the edges with a dry brush and one dark line run into the recesses; paint the armor shield in the same shade as the vehicle, so that it shows as part of it.
The part is meant for modifying an existing kit. The vehicle, paints and glue are not included in the package.
