This detail set from PANZER ART replaces the plastic gun barrel and mantlet on a model of the Soviet heavy tank JS-3 in 1:35 scale. The package combines a turned metal gun barrel of 122 mm caliber with a resin mantlet and muzzle brake. This is not a model of the tank but an aftermarket accessory meant to raise the fidelity of a finished kit. The set is conceived for the common plastic models of the JS-3 in this scale.
The JS-3 (IS-3) was a Soviet heavy tank from the very close of the Second World War, famous for its rounded cast turret and for the wedge-shaped bow of the hull nicknamed the pike nose. In a cast mantlet it carried the powerful 122 mm D-25 gun with its characteristic double-baffle muzzle brake. The shape of the mantlet and an exactly reproduced barrel are among the elements that most affect the overall impression of a finished model.
Before building, wash the resin parts in lukewarm soapy water to remove any mold release residue. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a knife and clean the surfaces up with abrasive paper, with respiratory protection. Glue resin with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). A turned metal barrel has a perfectly straight axis with no casting seams and a muzzle drilled to depth, so once painted it looks more realistic than a barrel in plastic. Before filler and paint, we recommend seating the parts dry and checking that the mantlet beds correctly into the opening in the turret of the base model. The double-baffle muzzle brake is a fine casting, so proceed carefully while cleaning it up, to avoid damaging it.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The tank model itself, glue and paints are not included in the package.
