A detail set in 1:35 scale from PANZER ART for a plastic kit of the heavy tank Pz.Kpfw. VI Ausf. B, known as the Tiger II or King Tiger. The set is cut specifically for the turret of Porsche design and holds the mantlet together with a turned barrel of the 8.8 cm KwK 43/3 L/71 gun. It is not a vehicle kit, but an accessory to a model already built.
Why the turret type matters
The Tiger II was built with two different turrets, and the mantlet of the armament is one of the places where they differ most. The Porsche design turret has a rounded front and a bulged mantlet, the production turret has a flat front and a mantlet of a different shape. They cannot be swapped, which is why the manufacturer makes the variants as separate items, and when buying it is necessary to pick the one matching the turret being built.
The Pz.Kpfw. VI Ausf. B was the heaviest German tank in series production during the Second World War. It carried an 8.8 cm gun with a barrel length of 71 calibers, far longer than that of the previous Tiger. The first vehicles built were given the turret designed for the original Porsche layout; only the later production turret simplified manufacture and did away with the rounded front, in which shells could be caught. On this weapon the KwK 43/3 designation refers to the form of the barrel tube.
Try the parts dry and make sure the mantlet sits into the turret front without a gap; on the rounded turret the mating surface is curved and the tolerance is small. Align the barrel axis looking from the front while the glue sets. Degrease the turned surface and apply primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth part. The long L/71 barrel looks better if you leave it the same shade as the vehicle and only add light dust at the root and a darkened muzzle at the end. Work a dark wash into the transition from the bulged mantlet to the turret.
The set is supplied unpainted, as an accessory to a plastic kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
