This is not a kit of the tractor but a resin accessory that replaces the engine section of the model with a variant covered by a canvas. The casting captures the sag of the cloth, the lashing straps and the folds where the canvas lies against the metal. It is exactly these soft shapes that are difficult for injection molded plastic, because a mold does not allow undercuts. The set is therefore a typical means of turning an ordinary kit into a vehicle with a clear story.
The Hanomag SS100 was a German heavy road tractor with a hooded layout, used in civilian and in military service. It was a powerful vehicle meant for hauling heavy semi-trailers and trailers, among other things in the role of an airfield tug. A canvas over the engine section was a practical measure in cold weather, when it helped keep the operating temperature of the engine and protected the unit from snow and rain. On a model, this accessory therefore also anchors the scene in time and climate.
Wash the casting in warm water with dish soap and separate the casting block with a saw rather than by snapping. Level the mating surface on abrasive paper laid on a flat board, so that the part does not rock on the model. It is glued with super glue, or with epoxy where you need time to set it in place. Apply a primer before painting. Tarpaulin looks good when it is not painted in the same shade as the metal but a little grayer and more matte, because cloth reflects light differently. Bring out the folds with a dark wash and go over the edges with a dry brush in a lighter tone. Add any worn or soiled areas sparingly, otherwise the model quickly loses legibility.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted, as a resin casting. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
