About product

Gneisenau - a COBI clip-together kit, Historical Collection World War II

The set belongs to the Historical Collection range, to the part devoted to the Second World War. It is a clip-together brick kit, not a classic plastic model: the parts fit into each other and hold mechanically, and the model grows directly during the build according to the enclosed instructions. The colors of the deck, of the hull and of the superstructure are given by the finish of the parts themselves and by the printing applied directly on them, so once it is completed nothing more is finished off.

The real subject

The Gneisenau was the second unit of the German Scharnhorst class, launched in 1936 and taken into service in 1938. The main armament consisted of nine 28 cm guns in three triple turrets, completed by secondary artillery and antiaircraft armament; the power plant with high-pressure boilers and turbines gave the ship a high speed for its time. The best known episode of her career was the joint operation with her sister ship in the Atlantic at the beginning of 1941 and the dash through the English Channel in February 1942. Shortly after it an air raid in harbor damaged the ship severely and she never returned to combat service.

Tips for building and display

Begin the build with the hull and work according to the instructions from the bottom up; the superstructure and the gun turrets come only at the end. Push the parts fully home, as otherwise the long hull will not come together in line and the model will sit crookedly on its stand. Work with particular care on the thin masts and crane arms. The finished model is on the longer side and is carried by the hull, not by the superstructure; display it on a flat surface or in a display case and wipe the dust off with a soft brush.

Who the kit is for

  • Anyone interested in the surface warships of the Second World War
  • Collectors of the Historical Collection range
  • Those who want a model finished as soon as it is built
  • Fans of large display-case models

The kit is supplied unassembled. Once completed according to the instructions the model is finished and calls for no further work.

FAQ

It is not. It is a clip-together brick kit - the parts fit into each other and hold mechanically. The model is finished as soon as it is built according to the instructions.

Check the treatment of the hull on the packaging. Count on a display-case model that stands on a flat surface.

With ships of this class it is as a rule a longer model, so count on enough room in a display case. Check the dimensions on the packaging.

Always by the hull, never by the superstructure, the masts or the cranes - those are the thinnest and bear the least load.
