About product

MiG-17F (LIM-5) in East German service - a COBI clip-together kit

The set belongs to the Historical Collection range, to the part devoted to the Cold War. It is a clip-together brick kit, not a classic plastic model: the parts fit into each other, hold mechanically, and the model comes about directly during the build according to the enclosed instructions. Both the colors and the national insignia are given by the finish of the parts and by the printing applied directly on them, so once it is completed nothing more is finished off on the model.

The real subject

The MiG-17F was a higher-performance variant of the MiG-17 subsonic fighter aircraft, driven by an engine with an afterburner. It was precisely this version that became the most widespread, and it was built under license in Poland as well, at the PZL Mielec works under the designation LIM-5. Polish production was aimed partly at the home air force and partly at export to further users of the Eastern Bloc - including the East German Air Force, which operated machines of this type as day fighters and later as trainers and attack aircraft too. The armament consisted of cannon in the nose, and the strong side of the aircraft was its agility in a maneuvering fight at short range.

Tips for building and display

Lead the build exactly according to the order in the instructions; the fuselage is put together section by section and going several steps back means taking the whole closed part apart. Always push the parts fully home, as otherwise the transition of the fuselage to the tail surfaces will not meet. Fit the wings and the stabilizers symmetrically, so that the model stands in line. The finished model is stable; display it on a flat surface or in a display case and wipe the dust off with a soft brush. Do not scrub the printed areas.

Who the kit is for

  • Anyone interested in the air forces of the Eastern Bloc in the Cold War period
  • Collectors of the Historical Collection range
  • Those who will appreciate a model finished as soon as it is built
  • Fans of licensed versions of Soviet machinery

The kit is supplied unassembled. Once completed according to the instructions the model is finished and calls for no further work.
