This set from Elefant replaces the plastic part of the front of the hull with a more accurate resin casting with add-on armor plates. The manufacturer offers several versions of this assembly, differing in the rendering of the weld and in the arrangement of the plates; this item is variant 2. It is not a kit of the vehicle but a detail accessory for a plastic model in 1:35 scale.
The Sturmgeschütz III was a German assault gun on the chassis of the Panzer III medium tank, originally intended for direct fire support of the infantry. The Ausf. F version of 1942 received a long 75 mm gun barrel, which turned the vehicle into an effective anti-tank weapon as well. Because the original front armor of the hull proved no longer sufficient, add-on plates 30 mm thick were fitted to the front; they were attached by welding or with bolts and their execution differed between the individual production batches. The Sturmhaubitze, that is, the howitzer version on the same chassis, was armed with a 105 mm caliber and differed above all in the barrel and in the layout of the superstructure.
First wash the casting in lukewarm water with dish soap so that the mold release agent is removed. Cut the casting block off with a saw and level the mating surface on abrasive paper laid on a flat board - only then will the part seat without a gap. Do the sanding wet and with respiratory protection. Try the part dry before gluing and level off any overhang; it is glued with super glue, and it is then advisable to fill the joint with putty and carry the texture of the surrounding armor across it. Start the painting with a primer that unifies the resin and the plastic. For the weathering, a wash into the welds and around the bolt heads and dry highlighting of the edges suit well; the add-on plates tend to look markedly worn in photographs.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
