About product

USAAF fabric seat belts in 1:48 scale

A set of seat belts of the US Army Air Forces of the Second World War in 1:48 scale from the Czech manufacturer Eduard, made in a fabric material. Fabric belts are markedly softer than photo-etched metal ones: they can be bent freely, folded and twisted, and they hold the shape without springing back. That is exactly why they let you create a genuine sag in the cockpit, with a belt draped over the edge of the seat, a loose end fallen onto the floor or a buckle turned to one side. On photo-etched metal such a shape is laborious to make, whereas here it comes about almost by itself. It is not a kit of an aircraft and not an interior set; the belts replace a single, though very conspicuous, detail.

What the set is for

A seat with its belts is the most visible thing in a cockpit, and an empty seat is one of the first things you notice on a finished model. Most kits either do not include belts at all or show them only as relief on the seat. American types of the Second World War, both fighters and bombers, used belts of a similar cut, so the set is usable across a wide range of models in 1:48 scale. It pays off especially on models built with the canopy open or without a pilot.

Building and painting tips

Cut the belts out with sharp scissors or a knife; the material does not fray the way ordinary cloth does, but rough handling will not do it any good. Before gluing, try the shape dry on the seat itself and form the belt so that it runs in a natural curve, because a horizontal, taut belt looks unnatural. They are bonded with a small drop of super glue or of thin PVA glue; metal buckles, where they are included, are bonded with super glue. Once in place, the material can be brought out with a weak wash in the folds and lightly dirtied with pigment, but otherwise no repainting is needed, as the print already carries both the shade and the texture of the cloth.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building American aircraft of the Second World War in 1:48 scale
  • Those who display a model with the cockpit open or without a pilot figure
  • Modelers who find photo-etched metal belts too stiff
  • Beginners, since fabric belts are more forgiving to work with than photo-etched parts

The set is an accessory, not a kit of an aircraft. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

They are soft. They can be bent and folded freely, they hold their shape and do not spring back, so it is far easier to create a natural sag over the seat.

You do not. Both the shade and the texture of the cloth are already part of the material. A weak wash in the folds and light dirtying with pigment is all that may be needed.

American aircraft of the Second World War in 1:48 scale. The cut of the belts was similar on these types, so the set covers a wide range of models.

A small drop of super glue or of thin PVA glue. The metal parts, where the set includes them, only with super glue.
