About product

Sarah and the Worm, a resin bust in 1:10 (Brokentoad Resin Cast)

A collector bust in cast resin in 1:10 scale that brings together two figures of a single scene. The building part is short: clean the casting up, put it together and prepare the surface. Everything else is painting, and it is precisely the pair of subjects that makes it a more interesting task than a head on its own, because you have to work out what will be the main thing and what the supporting part, so that the two do not pull attention away from each other.

Preparing the casting

Start with a wash in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and a thorough drying; residues of the release layer are the most frequent reason why paint does not hold on resin. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a knife, level the area with fine abrasive paper and sand resin wet with respiratory protection. Look over the parting lines under side lighting. When putting the smaller part in place, try it dry first and only then glue it with cyanoacrylate glue; even the seam out with modeling filler and sand it over.

Painting two figures in one scene

After the primer, think out the composition of colors: leave the main figure the highest contrast and the purest tones and give the accompanying parts a more muted treatment. Build the skin up from a mid tone in thin, thinned coats, with shadows into the eye sockets and under the chin and highlights on the forehead and the bridge of the nose. Deal with the eyes early and check the symmetry of one against the other. Draw the hair out with a dry brush along the strands, and the textiles with a wash into the folds and highlights on the edges. It is practical to paint the smaller figure separately while it can still be turned freely, and to fit it only at the end. The finished whole then goes onto the base.

Who the bust is for

  • Figure painters who want to work with the composition of two subjects
  • Collectors of fantasy figure work
  • More experienced modelers used to resin
  • Exhibitors looking for a storytelling piece for a cabinet

The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, primer and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not, it is supplied as an unpainted resin casting. The painting is the main part of the work.

Paint the smaller part separately while it can still be turned freely, and fit it onto the finished whole only at the end. Leave the main figure the higher contrast.

The number of parts and the height of the bust are stated on the box. The scale is 1:10.

It calls for washing the mold release agent off, cutting off the casting blocks, a primer and gluing with cyanoacrylate glue. In return it holds far finer detail.
