A character bust of a fantasy creature cast in resin in 1:10 scale. The building part is short: wash, put together, level and seal with a primer. Everything that matters then happens under the brush. With a non-human subject a painter has a freer hand than with a portrait: the skin tones can be shifted toward a colder or, on the contrary, a drier register according to the impression wanted, and a resin casting gives fine enough modeling for it.
First a wash in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and thorough drying; the remains of the release layer from the mold would undermine the painting. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a knife, never snap them off, and level the trace they leave with fine abrasive paper. Sand resin wet and with respiratory protection. Go over the parting lines under side lighting, as they are easy to miss on an intricate surface. Put the joints together dry first, then with cyanoacrylate glue, and fill the seam with modeling filler.
After the primer, lay the base tone of the large areas and work out where the lightest and the darkest place will be. Build the skin and the horn in thin, thinned coats, with a wash into the recesses and highlights from a dry brush along the edges; pure white and pure black do not pay off, and dirty, slightly broken tones work better. The eyes are decisive here too: paint them early and check the symmetry of one against the other. A wash into the folds and highlights along the tops bring out the textiles and the gathered clothing; leave the small accessories until the end and keep them muted. Apply the weathering only where dust would really settle. Mounting it on the base comes as the last step.
The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, primer and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
