About product

Young Miniatures 1:10 British Airborne WWII with PIAT

A resin portrait bust in 1:10 scale from Young Miniatures. The composition is completed by the British PIAT anti-tank weapon, which is named in the designation of the item itself. The casting is supplied unpainted and unassembled; the building is short and the main work lies in preparing the surface and in the painting.

The sculpting and the painting task

The presence of a weapon changes the character of the bust. Alongside cloth and skin a third material appears that is painted quite differently: metal. It will not take an even silver area; it needs a dark base, a subdued metallic coat and wear only where the weapon would really rub against the gear or the hands. It is precisely that local wear that makes metal convincing. The cloth of the paratrooper smock is matte and broken up by contrast, with a camouflage pattern that has to bend along the folds. The face is shaded by the helmet, so the upper part keeps a lower tonal value than the chin, but not at the cost of losing the eyes. Compositionally the portrait has to stay dominant, as both the weapon and the pattern are accompaniment.

Preparation and painting tips

Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water and let it dry. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, fill the seams and sand them with fine paper, wet and with your airways protected. Glue the weapon and the small parts with super glue and handle them carefully, as thin parts break easily in resin. Apply a thin primer in misting passes. Build the skin in many thinned layers and paint the eyes right at the start. Begin the cloth with a base tone, apply the pattern once it is dry with regard to the folds and at the end unify it with a thinned filter. Underlay the metal parts of the weapon with a dark base, apply the metal subdued and add the wear in spots on the edges and at the points of contact. Deal with the wooden parts using a glaze over a lighter base, so that the grain shows through. Keep the weathering restrained. Pin the bust to a base only once the painting is complete and sealed.

FAQ

Use a dark base, apply the metallic shade subdued and add the wear only in spots on the edges and at the points of contact. An even silver area always looks unnatural.

Thin resin parts break more easily than plastic, so handle them carefully and use a saw when cutting the casting blocks off; never break them.

Yes, the weapon is named in the title as part of the composition. Check the number of parts the casting is divided into on the box.
