About product

Young Miniatures 1:10 British SAS, North Africa 1941

A resin portrait bust in 1:10 scale from Young Miniatures. The casting is supplied unpainted and unassembled; the building is short, whereas the painting is the main part of the work. A desert subject is rewarding for a painter precisely because it works with a narrow palette of sandy and khaki tones, where every inaccurate shade shows at once.

The sculpting and the painting task

The subject of a member of a British desert unit in 1941 puts before the modeler tanned skin with a sharp boundary where the headgear protected it, and with the coarser texture of skin weathered by the wind. Dust settled in the folds of the cloth changes the perceived shade of the fabric: a sun-bleached blouse looks different on the stretched surface of a shoulder than in a deep fold at the neck. To that are added small leather straps, metal buckles and reflections on the equipment. Sculpturally these transitions are marked on the casting, but only the paint will decide whether they are legible.

Preparation and painting tips

Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water first and let it dry thoroughly, otherwise the primer will not adhere. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, fill the seams and sand them with fine paper; do not inhale resin dust and preferably sand wet. Join the parts with super glue. Apply a thin primer, and with desert subjects a lighter shade is proven, as it supports the final brightness of the cloth. Build the skin in thinned layers: a base tanned tone, then highlights gradually on the forehead, the nose and the cheekbones and subdued shadows into the eye sockets and under the jaw. Paint the eyes right at the start. Deal with the beard and the hair using a glaze and a dry brush. Let the cloth come out with filters in sandy tones and highlight the edges lightly. Darken the metal parts at the end and suggest wear. Apply the dust very sparingly with pigment into the folds and toward the lower edge, as desert weathering should be felt rather than overpower the portrait. Fit the base only once the painting is complete.

FAQ

It is not necessary. An airbrush is useful for the primer and for unifying large surfaces, but the face and the small details are painted with a brush in thinned layers.

Best of all with modeling pigments in sandy shades, applied with a dry brush into the folds and toward the lower edge. Use them sparingly so that they do not overpower the painting of the face.

The 1:10 scale is welcoming for practicing portrait painting, because the surfaces are large. Even so it is a figure subject, where a mistake in the shades of the skin cannot be hidden.
