A resin portrait bust in 1:10 scale from Young Miniatures with a British tank crew of the Second World War as its subject. The bust is not built like an ordinary model: once the casting has been cleaned up and aligned, the rest of the work belongs to the painter. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
A tank crew subject is restrained, and the craft therefore matters all the more. A single-color coverall with deep folds and pockets predominates, with it soft headgear and possibly headphones. The face usually stays fully uncovered, so it carries the whole weight of the portrait, and in 1:10 scale every transition of shade tells on it.
Wash the casting free of mold release agent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and align the parts dry. Fill the seams and sand them smooth. Apply the primer thinly, and preferably in two coats rather than one heavy one.
Painting: with a single-color coverall the key is modulation. Break the base tone down into shadows in the depths of the folds and highlights on their edges, make the transitions with glazes and keep the contrast within reason. A filter over the whole surface helps to unify the tone. Build the skin by layering and paint the eyes first. Leave the soft headgear matte and set any headphones or leather elements apart with a higher sheen, with a dark base under the buckles. Keep the weathering restrained, as grease stains and dust on the shoulders and sleeves are enough and the face should stay clean. Finally pin the bust to a base.
The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue, brushes and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
