The second male bust from the range the French brand Dynamo-Models has devoted to the famous Garde Républicaine. The portrait captures a guardsman in ceremonial dress with a helmet decorated by a long horsehair plume, the way visitors to Paris ceremonies know him.
The Republican Guard is part of the French Gendarmerie and performs ceremonial as well as guard duties: it guards the seats of the highest state institutions, escorts heads of state on official visits, and its mounted regiment is the last unit of its kind in the French armed forces. The ceremonial uniform with its polished helmet, dark tunic and cords grows out of a tradition reaching back to the nineteenth century and remains one of the most photogenic military uniforms in Europe to this day. You will meet guardsmen at the parade on the Champs-Élysées, at the gates of the Élysée Palace and at the welcoming of foreign delegations, where they form guards of honor.
The contrast of dark cloth and golden fittings is the main asset of the subject: the metal elements stand out when warm metallic shades are layered over a brown base, and the helmet is finished with fine highlights. The plume invites a single flat color, but lightening the individual strands looks better.
