1:10 Friedrich Barbarossa is a bust of the Hohenstaufen ruler by the Black Dog model brand, meant to be painted and displayed in a display case.
Responsibility details are not available.
The portrait bust captures the ruler whose byname arose from his red beard. The 1:10 scale is given in the name itself and gives room both to the features of the face and to period equipment, so that the center of gravity of the work lies in the painting, not in the assembly.
Frederick of the Hohenstaufen house was king of the Romans from 1152 and emperor from 1155. His reign is linked with repeated campaigns into northern Italy, with the dispute over the standing of the Lombard cities and with long tension toward the papal curia. In 1189 he took the head of the German part of the Third Crusade and died the following year in Asia Minor, before he reached the Holy Land. Later German tradition made of him the legendary sleeping emperor who is one day to return.
What will call for the most work is the hair and the beard: a ginger tone is built up in layers from a darker base toward brightened strands, otherwise it will merge with the skin. Lead the skin in warmer shades and concentrate the shadows under the brows, at the root of the nose and under the cheekbones. Metal surfaces come out when you darken them slightly after painting and draw the edges back out in a lighter tone. Think the direction of the light through beforehand and keep to it over the whole bust, otherwise the individual areas will start to contradict each other.
