A resin portrait bust in 1:10 scale from Young Miniatures. The subject is a member of the crew of a German bomber in 1940. The sculpting and the painting task are set by the cut of the flying gear and by the surfaces that are painted. The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
Aviation subjects have one peculiarity for a painter: the gear is largely leather and rubberized, so smooth glossy areas dominate, with straps, buckles and hard edges appearing among them. The face tends to be partly covered by headgear or equipment, which makes the eyes and the visible part of the skin all the more worth the work.
Wash the casting free of mold release agent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and align the parts dry. Fill the seams and sand them smooth, because on smooth leather areas any unevenness shows at once under the paint. Apply the primer thinly, ideally in two light coats.
Painting: deal with the eyes and the skin first, while the head is accessible. Build the leather of the flying gear on a dark base, pick the light out with glazes along the edges and the surfaces and finish with a satin varnish, because a leather surface must have a soft reflection rather than a sharp one. Leave the straps and the canvas parts completely matte by contrast, underlay the buckles and fittings darkly and bring them out with metallic paint. If the casting includes glass or a life vest, set them apart again mainly by sheen. Keep the weathering minimal, as wear on the edges of the leather is enough. Finally pin the bust to a base.
The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue, brushes and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
