A portrait bust in 1:10 scale cast in resin. It is not a classic kit: the casting is supplied in several parts that only need to be aligned and glued, and the main work begins with the paints. In a large scale every transition of tone shows on the face, so the result stands or falls with the painting, not with the building.
Preparing the surface
Wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water and rid them of the mold release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a sharp knife or a fine saw, run a scalpel along the mold parting lines and finish them with wet sandpaper, protecting your airways. Fill and sand the seams after gluing, otherwise they will show in the painting as a dark line. The parts are bonded with cyanoacrylate super glue.
The foundation is a thin coat of primer, without which resin will not take the paint evenly. A light primer is more advantageous for skin, because the tones stay clean over it. The face is built up in layers: a mid flesh tone, lighting on the forehead, the bridge of the nose and the cheekbones, darker transitions in the eye sockets, under the nose and under the jaw. Make the transitions thinned and in several passes, as one heavy coat would flood the detail. Leave the eyes until last; they are painted with the thinnest brush and want a steady hand. Build the hair from a dark base and pick the strands out with a dry brush. The fabrics need a matte surface and fine shading in the folds, while metal accessories will take a wash into the hollows and polished edges. A weak weathering pass at the end brings the whole into one tone. Pin the finished bust to a base and display it at eye level, otherwise the work on the face will be lost.
The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
