The casting is cleaned up, aligned and prepared for paint, and after that it is the painter's work. The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
A modern subject is painted differently from classic wartime busts. Instead of wool and leather there are technical fabrics, nylon webbing with hook-and-loop fasteners, plastics and synthetic materials, each with a different sheen. A bearded face and tanned skin are typical, often together with goggles or headgear, so the order of painting needs to be planned in advance.
Wash the casting free of mold release agent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and align the parts dry. Fill and sand the seams. Apply the primer thinly, so that it does not clog the engraving of the webbing and the seams.
Painting: on a modern subject the skin tends to be tanned and matte, with a stronger contrast than on winter subjects. Deal with the beard and the stubble using a glaze and a dry brush, not full paint. Paint the multicolor camouflage pattern by hand, with a thin brush and soft edges; a regularly repeated pattern gives away that it is paint rather than cloth. Leave the nylon webbing matte, the plastics and buckles slightly glossy, and finish any lenses of the goggles with a gloss varnish, because it is precisely the difference in sheen that makes modern gear legible. Use the weathering sparingly: fine light dust on the shoulders and in the folds suits a dry environment. Pin the finished bust to a base.
