A portrait bust of a US tanker in 1:10 scale, cast in modeling resin. A tank crew subject offers a combination that is rewarding to paint: a leather jacket with faded edges, a soft crew helmet and a face on which every inaccurate transition shows in a large scale. The bust is not supplied painted and the main work is precisely in the paint.
The parts come separately, typically the head apart from the torso, so that the undercut surfaces under the collar and the helmet stay legible. Wash everything in lukewarm soapy water first, or the mold release agent will show itself as peeling paint. Cut the casting remnants off with a saw, level the mating surfaces and try the fit dry; only then bond them with super glue. Fill the seam and sand it back wet. Apply the unifying primer in a thin coat so that the fine modeling of the face and the texture of the leather of the jacket are not clogged.
Build the face by layering: a mid skin tone, deepened shadows and highlights, then the lips, the eyes and the stubble with the thinnest brush. The leather jacket is the second hard task: leather has a deeper, warmer tone than cloth, it rubs through to the light on the edges and the creases and will take a light satin sheen, unlike completely matte cotton. Pick out the metal zippers, buckles and buttons with a dry brush. The weathering on a tanker should be matter-of-fact: a dark wash into the folds and discreet traces of oil and dust on the lower areas. Fit the finished bust to its base only at the end, so that the painting is not damaged while you handle it.
The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and putty are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
