About product

ADVANCED masking set for the F-4G Phantom II Wild Weasel V in 1:48

A masking set in kabuki paper for an F-4G Phantom II Wild Weasel V model in 1:48 scale. It is not a model of an airplane but an accessory for the painting stage. The templates, cut to the outline, are stuck onto the clear parts and once sprayed they leave frames with a sharp edge and the glass clean. The ADVANCED grade lies between the basic and the most comprehensive one: it offers a wider reach than BASIC without the maximum scope.

The BASIC, ADVANCED and EXPERT grades

New Ware grades its masking sets by scope. BASIC is the basic grade with the smallest scope, aimed at the glazing. ADVANCED has a wider reach. EXPERT is the most comprehensive and is aimed at modelers who want to spray even the small details instead of brushing them. The grades are not combined - a higher one usually covers the scope of the lower one as well, so one set is bought according to the level of detail required.

The real subject

The McDonnell Douglas F-4G Phantom II Wild Weasel V is a two-seat version of the Phantom adapted for suppressing ground radar defenses. It came about by converting F-4E airframes and carries equipment for finding sources of radar emission, with antennas in the nose and in a pod on top of the vertical tail. The tandem cockpit has a multi-part canopy, so masking the glazing is a longer job here than on single-seat aircraft.

Masking and spraying tips

Kabuki paper is soft and its adhesive has low tack, so a mask follows curved shapes and leaves no residue on the plastic once it is removed. Degrease the clear part beforehand and let it dry. Lift the template with tweezers, offer it up to the glass and press it down from the center outward with a soft stick; press the edges at the frames especially carefully, because that is where the paint seeps most often. Cover the rest of the glazing with masking tape and trim any surplus paper with a new blade on a mat rather than on the clear part. Spray thin coats and keep the gun perpendicular to the mask rather than at an angle under it; the first coat belongs to the shade of the cockpit interior. Take the masks off while they are still fresh, pulling back over themselves at a sharp angle.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the F-4G model in 1:48 for whom the basic grade is not enough
  • Modelers who spray with a gun and want clean edges outside the cockpit as well
  • Builders who do not want to spend an evening cutting masks from tape
  • Anyone looking for a middle ground in the scope of the set

The set contains masking templates only. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

They differ in scope. BASIC deals with the basics, that is the glazing. ADVANCED has a wider reach. EXPERT is the most comprehensive and is aimed at modelers who want to spray the small details too.

You do not. The grades are not combined - a higher grade usually covers what a lower one does. One set is bought according to the level of detail required.

It is not. The package contains masking templates only; the kit, paints and glue are bought separately.

Shortly after spraying, while the finish is still fresh, pulling back over themselves at a sharp angle. Kabuki paper usually leaves no adhesive residue.
